2020 – A new year, the start of a new decade and with it birthday celebrations for Swansea University – 100 years! Swansea University is not alone with 2020 also seeing the likes of Ideal Home magazine, Ercol Furniture, Mazda cars and Haribo reaching their Centenary Year also – sweet!

These organisations were founded in a time of economic prosperity known as the “Roaring Twenties”. Social and cultural trends were shifting; women getting more independence; Oxford University allowing women to graduate; American women winning the vote; Agatha Christie had her first novel published “The Mysterious Affair at Styles”; the first hand-held hair dryers made their appearance; and the shingle being a popular hair style.

Come and explore Swansea University’s Richard Burton Archives where you can go back in time and experience the last 100 years through our students’ eyes by reading their lives in the student newspapers throughout the last 10 eventful decades.
